One liner: The beefed up Wii-like wand feels less compelling than when it was first announced, especially in the wake of the 360 Kinect.
Yes, we got to play all of the big technology innovations at this year’s E3 (Xbox 360 Kinect, Nintendo 3DS, and PS3 in 3D), and the most disappointing was (sadly) Sony Move. On its own, Sony’s PS3 Move is Wii Motion Plus with amazing graphics. If that’s what you’re looking for, then you should be ..read more
One liner: PS3 in 3D is definitely very cool, but it doesn’t exactly make for a great gaming experience.
There was a lot going on at E3 2010 last week, but Sony’s 3D push was very apparent. They had an entire section of their booth devoted to 3D, and some big titles like Gran Turismo 5 were also shown off in 3D.
Unfortunately, not all is well with 3D play on the PS3. We’ll avoid getting all business-y on all ..read more
Mortal Kombat has long been a fighting genre laughingstock among the more serious competitive players, and with good reason – with the exception of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the entire series has been horrendously bug-ridden and imbalanced. At the same time, it has brought forth a style and storyline that has gathered an absolutely massive fanbase of more casual players.
Normally, this isn’t a series I’d even bother writing about, but in the wake of E3, we now know enough ..read more
As the conferences are being shaken up to change the future of the NCAA, the virtual landscape remains steady as NCAA Football 11 nears its release. The team at Tiburon is putting in a lot of effort this year to fix a lot of the things that fans have been wanting for years, which should at least make this year’s game the one to watch. We got our hands on the new demo to see how much these ..read more
One liner: A much more time-effective and inviting Madden.
With basketball wrapping up, that leaves a little more time to focus on good old American football. And the Madden series is seemingly becoming more and more of an American tradition. But some traditions have to adapt to the times. Gameflow is the latest feature that makes its debut in Madden 11. Its goal is to cut play time in half and to simplify the process of choosing plays. And it goes ..read more
One liner: Easily has some of the coolest weaponry at E3
Eff this building. That’s what you want to say as your character tears away at the infrastructure of some 100-feet building in any of the most recent installments of Red Faction.
Eff this building and this monster. That’s what you say after using the magnagun (think “magnet gun”), one of the newest additions we saw in a behind-closed-doors demonstration of Red Faction: Armageddon.
The magnagun is, as hinted to, essentially ..read more
What do you get when you mix the developers behind Painkiller with the masterminds working on the conclusion to the Gears of War franchise? An over-the-top shooter that rewards players for “killing with style.” If you are the type of gamer who finds it generally boring to hop into every shooting game and rinse and repeat the same mechanic of cover and fire, than Bulletstorm might be right up your alley. Bulletstorm is a game about brutal violence, originality and ..read more
While Microsoft spent plenty of time talking about their new Kinect hardware and showcasing proven franchises, no game probably gained more attention and fanfare than that of Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the new action game being developed by Kojima Productions. With only a trailer to show off what exactly the game entails, it seems like there will be plenty of slicing and dicing as players once again control Raiden in an all new adventure that takes the Metal Gear Solid ..read more

One liner: Keyboard + plus a six-string = you may be able to play for real now!
By now, after a few years and 250 versions of Guitar Hero, we’ve become somewhat numb to the music game genre. We’ve strummed the fret enough. We’ve smashed the drum pad millions of times. We’ve even strained our voices. Harmonix, on the other hand, hasn’t grown tired of their genre. Instead, they’ve only become more and more excited and SmashPad got to reap the ..read more

One liner: Singing that familiar song, but space battles might be a scratch on the record.
While we’ve already been treated to a taste of Halo Reach, Microsoft showed off some more details behind closed doors at E3. A demo showed off some of the new features that weren’t included in the beta, a new version of Firefight and something entirely new to the series: space battles.
The demo we were shown kicked off about halfway through the game. The Covenant have ..read more
One liner: One of the bigger surprises at E3, the sequel to Kane & Lynch: Dead Men has an engrossing level of style and polish.
For those of you who don’t know, there was quite a bit of controversy surrounding Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (Google it if you like). The aftermath led to mixed reviews for the mediocre game, which we scored a 5.9. In fact, we said it was “barely worth a rental.”
Three years later and, well, times they-are-a-changin. ..read more
We definitely checked out more Sony content today including Move and 3D (we’re going to get our hands on Killzone 3 tomorrow). We also had the chance, however, to sneak in one Xbox 360 Kinect game and boy was it a blast. One liner: Deus Ex is a classic series that’s looking a bit behind the times.
Deus Ex is making a comeback this year with Human Revolution, the latest in the famed series that raised the bar for the first-person action adventure genre early last decade. In our time checking out a behind-closed-doors demonstration of the game, it’s apparent that in the past few years those standards have changed and Deus Ex is starting to feel dated.
On paper, Deus Ex: ..read more
One liner: Gears of War on crack, which isn’t a bad thing.
It’s been a trend in the past couple of E3’s that we’ve seen third-person shooters that feel like Gears of War with different window dressing. On the surface, Sega’s Vanquish seems like it falls in the category. After extended play time, it still feels like that. That sounds disappointing, but believe us, it’s not.

During the heyday of the PS2’s success, no companies dominated the mainstream market more than Insomniac (Ratchet and Clank, Resistance), Naughty Dog (Jak and Daxter, Uncharted) and Sucker Punch (Sly Cooper, Infamous). While those companies now have a much bigger impact on the PS3, the nostalgia deriving from the characters these companies created back on the PS2 has not been forgotten and there will probably never be a greater collection of iconic cartoonish characters for any system ever again.

The surprises just don’t seem to end here in Los Angeles. Aside from the Lakers winning, we have some titles suddenly being added to our “Upcoming Releases” list.
Granted, there isn’t too much known about the 3DS, but we do know now that Star Fox 64 and and a certain timeless classic are being remade for Nintendo’s latest handheld.

Amidst all the hype surrounding E3 2010 are huge first party announcements. At Microsoft, we have the Kinect along with the new and improved Xbox 360. With Sony, we have their interesting PlayStation Move, insane exclusive content, and their new premium online service. And with Nintendo, we got the 3DS.
But while Iwata seemed to go on and on about all the support the 3DS is getting, he didn’t seem to get in-depth with the games worth mentioning, so feast your ..read more
