Preview: UFC Undisputed 2010 (PS3, Xbox 360)
When THQ released UFC Undisputed 2009 last year, UFC and game fans alike were treated with the first really enjoyable mixed-martial arts game. We recently got our hands with a demo that was only released to the press and UFC online member community, and the game is shaping up to provide the most realistic experience yet.
To do this, the developers gave the fighter models even better physical details during gameplay. Nearly all the trailers of the game reflect real-time gameplay, and everything down to the hairs and beads of sweat give this game quite a look on a high-definition display. The commentary is quite lively as well, featuring Bruce Buffer once again being the main ring announcer.
The demo had four fighters available, each in the light-heavyweight division. Among these four were Lyoto Machida, Mauricio Rua, Rashad Evans, and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Each fighter had their own unique entrance biography, further adding to what’s looking to be a pristine presentation to the package.
Yukes claims that numerous upgrades have been made to the gameplay, but aside from more responsive controls than ever (strikes seem to be made on the fly once a button is pressed), it doesn’t really seem like anything is new. Given the fact that each of the four usable fighters are in the same weight class with similar measurements, there wasn’t much of a difference (if any) with their fighting styles. None of the fighters are southpaw either, so there wasn’t an opportunity to switch stances with anybody.
Of course, with all the limits, the demo seems to be targeted at folks who simply can’t wait to get their hands on this game. At this point, it’s too early to judge upon whether it’ll be better than its predecessor, but once the game comes out we’ll have a better idea of how much superior this game is with its improved dodging in the control scheme. UFC Undisputed 2010 is scheduled for release on May 25th, and you can bet we’ll have a review up at about that time.
