Blizzard Announces StarCraft II Open Beta Registration Has Begun

Blizzard has recently announced that they are opening up registration for the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta.  As posted on their website the beta will allow gamers to “play, test, and experience the multiplayer aspect of StarCraft II, as well as get a first look at the newly revamped Battle.net.”  Those hopeful participants should head on over to Blizzard’s official website for the game and sign up for a chance to be one of the lucky thousand or so chosen.

StarCraft II is perhaps one of the most anticipated sequels of all time and given the pedigree and popularity of the first game this beta will surely be a hot commodity to participate in.  Despite the beta focusing solely on the Wings of Liberty campaign, which lets players control the human faction, the multiplayer aspect of the beta will let everyone try out the Zerg and Protoss factions as well.

For those not familiar with Battle.net, Blizzard expects it to be the next breed of PC multiplayer, allowing players to engage in extensive player vs. player games without LAN capabilities and with enhanced in-game functionalities.  The Battle.net feature will also keep track of all Blizzard games activated on any individual players account as well as include increased matchmaking searches and competitive mode functions which should help alleviate lag and dropouts.

StarCraft II still has no concrete release date and Blizzard has a solid reputation for taking a long time releasing their most coveted of games.  Expect StarCraft II to release no sooner than 2011 and this beta as a chance to hold you over for what is surely a long wait to come.
